Punta del Este & Jose Ignacio — Southern Cone

Atlantic resort Uruguay at two speeds: the peninsula's high-rise beach town, and the low-rise, wind-brushed coast east of it around José Ignacio.

Weather · Southern-hemisphere summer season

The season runs from late December through February, when the region is busiest and the ocean is warmest. March keeps much of the warmth with fewer people. Winter, from June to August, is cool, windy and largely shuttered on the coast.

Summer is warm rather than tropical; the Atlantic stays bracing even in January.

Where to base

Top neighborhoods to stay in

The Peninsula

First visits, walkable stays, car-free trips

The dense core between the harbour and Playa Brava: apartment towers, restaurants, the marina and two beaches with opposite characters — calm on the harbour side, open Atlantic on the other. It is the only base on this coast where you can genuinely walk to dinner, and the only one that stays functional year round.

La Barra

Later nights, younger trips

Just east across the wave-shaped bridge, and a clear step down in density from the peninsula. In high season it is the most social stretch of the coast; outside it, much of the strip is closed. Walkable within itself, but you drive to reach it and to leave it.

Manantiales

Beach-led stays that still want the coast's social side nearby

Quieter than La Barra and closer to open Atlantic beach, with houses rather than towers. A reasonable compromise base: calmer than the peninsula in January, but not as remote as the far east coast.

José Ignacio

Slow, design-led stays with a car

A small lighthouse village on a point well east of Punta del Este, kept low-rise by planning. Treat it as a separate destination rather than another neighbourhood: it has a handful of streets, a short season, and no practical way to reach the peninsula without driving. Choose it if the point is to be somewhere restrained and quiet; do not choose it expecting town amenities on foot.

Punta Ballena

Views over crowds

A headland west of town — residential, elevated, home to Casapueblo. Car-dependent, and detached from both the peninsula's walkability and the eastern coast's scene.

Do

Top experiences

  • Casapueblo at sunset

Carlos Páez Vilaró's cliffside sculpture-building at Punta Ballena, best in the last hour of light.

  • The José Ignacio coast

Lighthouse, two beaches with opposite characters — one calm, one open Atlantic — and a village small enough to walk end to end.

  • Isla de Lobos and Isla Gorriti

Boat excursions run from the harbour. Isla de Lobos, roughly 8 km offshore, is a national park within Uruguay's protected-area system and holds colonies of South American fur seal and southern sea lion; check with the operator what current protected-area rules allow before booking. Gorriti is a short hop to sheltered beaches.

  • Fundación Pablo Atchugarry

A sculpture park and art foundation inland from Manantiales.

  • Wine country day

Vineyards in the Maldonado hinterland, an easy drive from the coast.
